Fiber to the Home

Frequently Asked Questions

We are bringing fiber to the homes and businesses in your area. As your local, family-owned provider, MLGC delivers high speed broadband services, TV, telephone, surveillance, and advanced business solutions to our customers via a 100% fiber optic network. We are committed to providing the best technologies and services at competitive rates. We pride ourselves on having an experienced TEAM who lives in the same communities we serve.

What is Fiber-To-The-Home and how does it benefit me?

Fiber-To-The-Home (FTTH) is fiber optic cable in which extends from our central office all the way to your home. Fiber-optic cables contain optical fiber, which are hair-thin strands of glass specially designed to trap and transmit light pulses.  Fiber can carry data for great distances without signal loss or interference.  A fiber connection to your home will provide you with access to virtually unlimited bandwidth capacity and internet speed, enabling you to enjoy a better experience with streaming, online gaming, cloud storage, online education and much more.

In addition, having a fiber connection may increase the value of a home by several thousand dollars.  Fiber increases service reliability and stability.

What kind of equipment will I need?

You will need an Optical Network Terminal (ONT). MLGC provides this equipment to every home we serve. An ONT converts the light pulses from a fiber optic line to electronic pulses that power all the services you can sign up for with us!

A wireless router is also needed if you want Wi-Fi. MLGC rents high quality routers via our managed Wi-Fi service. You are welcome to provide your own router if you choose. Please note that if you provide your own router, we cannot support or manage your wireless service.

Do I have to be home when the ONT is installed?

Yes, MLGC prefers that you are home so that we can show you the new system. Sometimes wiring is needed and it helps if you are there to work with us. We will contact you when service is ready to be installed and set a specific date and time that works for you.

How long will it take to install?

A service install depends on multiple factors. If you sign up for more than one service, we will need more time. A standard internet install takes around 45-60 minutes. If wiring is required or additional services are needed, the install may take longer. A representative should be able to answer this question when scheduling the installation with you.

What should I expect for construction?

A typical install works like this – first, we install duct in the ground. This typically goes by your house but not always up to it. Drops are done to those who have called and signed up for it. Once all the duct is in, we come around and blow fiber into the duct. After this, the line needs to be spliced and connected to each home. Once this is done, we call to schedule installs!

You may notice flags and paint in your yard, this is for the utility locate that is completed before we do any work in the yard.

Do I have to sign anything?

We require an easement to go across your property. This comes very early in the process because we plan our route based on the easements we get signed. If we do not have an easement, we will not be able to bring service. If you signed an easement and we have not brought service to you yet, it may be due to multiple factors. Feel free to call us for an update!

We do not require a contract to be signed but do prefer to get a verbal agreement that you would like service. We try to bring service only to those who want it, this helps speed up the construction process.
